Six wineries in the region scored gold at the 2020 Virginia Governor’s Cup wine competition.
Presented by the Virginia Wineries Association, the Governor’s Cup is a wine-tasting competition in which judges from around the world determine the best wines in the state. Chester Gap Cellars and Glen Manor Vineyards in Front Royal, Muse Vineyards in Woodstock, Shenandoah Vineyards in Edinburg, Crosskeys Vineyard in Mount Crawford near Harrisonburg, and Delaplane Cellars in Delaplane won gold medals during the four-week competition, according to a news release sent out by the association.
There were 64 Virginia wines from 40 different wineries that were awarded gold medals. Preliminary tastings were held at the Capital Wine School in Washington, D.C., in January, with the final wine tastings taking place in Richmond at the beginning of February.
Of the gold medal-winning wines, 12 top-scoring red and white wines will be featured in the Governor’s Cup Case to showcase the commonwealth’s top wines. Glen Manor Vineyards’ 2015 Cabernet Franc was featured in the Governor’s Cup Case last year.
